Club meeting – 11 May 2016

Meeting this Week

When
Wednesday 11th May 2016, 7:30pm
Where
Karori Arts and Crafts Centre (The Newman Centre), 7 Beauchamp St, Karori

Bring along your images of Reflections and Looking Up for the first two of our themes for the Wellington Interclub competition.  It doesn’t matter if they’re not in their “final” format yet – we can discuss, critique and toss around ideas and see if we can come up with some winning images!

Club meeting – 27 April 2016

Meeting this Week

When
Wednesday 27th April 2016, 7:30pm
Where
Karori Arts and Crafts Centre (The Newman Centre), 7 Beauchamp St, Karori

  1. Show what ya got!  For those that came along to the night shoot a fortnight ago, bring along the best of your photos from that session (or, for those of us who were running Magic Lantern in their camera and flattened their batteries just half way into the evening, then bring along what few photos you DID take!).  For those that didn’t come along then bring a selection of your latest and greatest ones.
  2. Choose the 4 themes for the Hutt Battle.  Current ideas floating around on the club’s Facebook page are:
  • Food
  • Minimalist
  • B&W Portrait
  • Colour
  • Multiple exposure
  • Selfie
  • The night
  • Special effects
  • Symmetry
  • Pretty ugly

So, bring along your ideas and we’ll select the best 4 (not necessarily the 4 that we already have the most photos in our back catalogs, but perhaps the 4 that we think will be the most fun and/or challenging to do)!

  1. Time to get serious about the Wellington Interclub, which means giving thought to what categories each of us think we can best contribute to.  If you have some images that think may be up for the challenge then bring them along.  While I don’t think I’ve got any particularly good images in hand, I do have an idea or two that I’d appreciate your feedback/constructive criticism on.

And other things photographic…

  • I stumbled upon Australian photographer Peter Coulson.  I just love his black and white work and especially his studio setup… very tempted to go on one of his workshops.  In the meantime, all I need is a studio and a beautiful fashion model.  Any volunteers?
  • And for those that enjoy controversial subjects… Why Sony’s Full Frame Pro Mirrorless Was a Fatal Mistake
  • The National PSNZ Conference has just taken place over ANZAC weekend.  If any of you were there then we’d love to hear how it went.

Club meeting – 13 April 2016

Meeting this Week

Theme:            Wellington by Night

Date:                Wednesday 13th April 2016

Meetup Time:   6:30pm (sunset is at 5:53pm)

Meetup Place:  The front of the Wellington City Library (in Victoria St)

Duration:          Shoot ‘til ya drop!  Or until enough of us feel like resting… inside one of Wellington’s establishments that has a convivial atmosphere and serves refreshing beverages!

Weather:          No contingency plan. If it’s dry then we’ll get photos of a dry Wellington. If it’s raining, there’ll be just that bit extra of reflection off the roads!

Equipment:      Feel free to bring a tripod if you want.  And a flash too, if you think it’ll help!

Followup:         Bring your best shots along to the following meeting (April 27th)

Club meeting – 23 March 2016

Meeting this Week

When
Wednesday 23rd March 2016, 7:30pm
Where

Making it our own

Following on from Brian’s great tech talk on Lightroom last time, we sent out two images (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sufiwwnxx1c4v0g/AABZxQ8sQzqkYvs5DfvWGG66a?dl=0) for you to “make your own“.  Bring them along on a USB stick tomorrow night and talk us through why you made the images that way and the steps you went through to achieve that.

Interclub Challenge

Let’s have a chat about the topics for the 2016 Wellington Region Interclub Battle (Wednesday 17 August):

  • Reflections
  • Looking up
  • New Zealand Landscape
  • Happiness
  • New Zealand Wildlife
  • Macro
  • Impressions
  • Blue
  • Landing
  • Triptych – Based on the Haiku – Winter leaves, buds tightly rolled, silence.

Need a hand?

Got an idea for a photo – maybe for the Interclub, or PSNZ Canon Online or perhaps a personal project, and you need a hand? Want to flesh out a concept?  Or do you need an assistant (reflectors don’t hold themselves up, do they?!!!) for a shoot?   Feel free to tell us what you’ve got on your mind.

Hutt Battle

This is an annual competition between us and the Hutt Camera Club and is held in November.  The format is projected only. Each club contributes 10 images in each of the 4 categories. These are displayed randomly and the judge gives a score, normally out of 10. The team with the highest score at the end of the evening wins – we won last year’s battle!

Last year’s subjects were:

  • Frame within a frame
  • Moody
  • Red
  • Pride

We get to choose this year’s topics, so let’s bounce around some ideas.

Night Shoot

Let’s put a stake in the ground and come up with a date and time that would suit for a night shoot.  Maybe one evening in the bush (Otari) and another one in the City?

Club meeting – 24 February 2016

Meeting this Week

When
Wednesday 24th February 2016, 7:30pm
Where
Karori Arts and Crafts Centre (The Newman Centre), 7 Beauchamp St, Karori

Tonight we have a few things to do

  • Look at our photos from last meeting’s outing to Princess Bay
  • Look at our photos from the holidays
  • Pay the $5.00 Club portion of our annual fees to Heuchan
  • Discuss what events/learnings/speakers we’d like for the year
  • Discuss options to replace the old projector

Photos

Suggest that total number be kept to a dozen, split how you want between those that you took at Princess Bay and those from the Christmas break.

* Can people please size images to 1280px on the longest side, and name the images as follows (this will help Heuchan with organising images):

  • For Princess Bay photos: princessbay_firstname_lastname_some_title.jpg
  • For other photos: other_firstname_lastname_some_title.jpg

Club Fees

By now we should all have paid the Arts and Craft Centre portion of our fees to them, which just leaves the Club portion ($5.00) which may be paid directly to Heuchan tonight.

Ideas for the year

Bring along your ideas for what outings we can go on, sites we can visit, topics you’d like to cover, people you’d like to see and, most importantly of all… what you can contribute to the club in terms of organising speakers, events etc.

Projector

The current projector is no longer “cutting edge” and its habit of mis-rendering colours means that it is probably overdue for a replacement… but with what?  A more modern rojector?  A W-I-D-E screen tv?  Let’s talk through a few ideas.
