Club Meeting – 25 March 2015

Meeting this Week

When
Wednesday 25th March, 19:30
Where
Karori Arts and Crafts Centre, 7 Beauchamp St, Karori

There was a good turn out last week and it was good to hear that images
were shown.

This week a is more of the same. However, it might pay to also start
thinking about the Wellington Interclub Print Competition. The Hutt
Camera Club are hosting this year and it is all print. However, that
does not mean the topics are any easier.

  • Window Lit Portraits
  • Inspiring Views
  • Stormy Weather
  • Intimate Moments
  • 10 square yards
  • Let’s Make Music
  • Architecture
  • Glassware
  • Backlit
  • Industrial Disease

Just reminder that the Karori Arts and Crafts Centre are holding
their AGM this Sunday. Details are

When
Sunday 29th March 2015, 14:00
Where
Karori Arts and Crafts Centre, 7 Beauchamp St, Karori

If you can make it to this, that would be good. Traditionally, the
camera club have not had a good representation as it has previously
been on a week day. This year it is on a weekend.

Lastly

I have mentioned Tony Bridge before. A fine photographer, artist and
writer. His most recent blog post about judging/critiquing other’s
images is really worth a read.

Club Meeting – 11 March 2015

Meeting this Week

When
Wednesday 11th March, 19:30
Where
Karori Arts and Crafts Centre, 7 Beauchamp St, Karori

It is going to be a bit of a pot luck evening. Turn up, for a discussion on photography and be ‘serendipitised’. Those who didn’t get an opportunity to show last week, can do so this week.

Lastly

Mike Mellia’s “A selfie a day keeps the doctor away” project is a bit of an understatement. The term ‘selfie’ conjures up a a snapshot taken with a phone camera. These are anything but.

Club Meeting – 25 February 2015

Last meeting we had a good turnout to Makara Beach. The weather was
absolutely stunning and we managed to stay until well past sunset. It is
a trip that we must do again.

Meeting this Week

When
Wednesday 25th February, 19:00
Where
Karori Arts and Crafts Centre, 7 Beauchamp St, Karori

This week we are going to take a look at the images that people took
from this outing.

Now for others who weren’t at Makara, if you would like to show some
recent images, feel free to bring these along as well.

It is quite interesting to see what diverse photos a group of people at
the same event can produce. So I suggest that we show the photos from the
Makara outing first. Once that is done, we can take at look at the other
images.

So to the specifics.

  • Bring along up to a dozen photos separated into two groups. One group
from the Makara outing, the other for recent work that you want to
show. Suggest that total number be kept to a dozen, split how you
    want between the two groups.
  • Can people please size images to 1280px on the longest side?
  • Can people please name images as follows? This will help Heuchan with organising images.

    • For makara photos: makara_firstname_lastname_some_title.jpg
    • For other photos: other_firstname_lastname_some_title.jpg

The start of a New Year means that it is time to renew membership.

To recap, we need to subscribe to the Karori Arts and Crafts Centre. That
is $30. There was a form and instructions in the January Newsletter that
Margaret sent out.

And then we have a $5 fee to cover the sundry items such as gifts to
speakers. This is paid to Heuchan. If you can bring this to the meeting
that would be good.

And thanks to those who responded to the email confirming inclusion
on the list.

Lastly

Here is a project that has gained a fair bit of attention, Humans of New York

Thanks to Bill for reminding me about this. While listening to the On Taking Pictures podcast,

I had heard about ‘Humans of New York’ in connection with this project Let’s Send Kids to Harvard

Questions that come to mind are

  • Is this what photography is all about?
  • Are these ‘good’ photographs?
  • Is this is an example of a body of work where the body as a whole is lot stronger than the individual images?

Club Outing – 11 February 2015

Well another year is upon us. I apologise for the slow start,
but it has been a lazy Summer…

For the first meeting, as in previous years, we will do an outing. This
year it is in the opposite direction to what we normally do i.e. we are
going to do Makara Beach.

By my calculations, Sunset should be about 20:30. So we should be able to
get a bit of light.

Makara Beach

Suggest that we meet at Rec Centre at 18:00 so that we can Car Pool.
If you prefer to meet at the Beach, that is fine. We should be there
around 18:30

After taking some photos for a while, hopefully we can gather to have a
coffee/drink and socialise. Unfortunately, the Café closes at 17:00 so we
won’t be able to use that. So suggest that people bring along a flask
with their favourite liquid refreshment.

Lastly

Over the break I got into a discussion about what is a photograph?
The question was more about if something looks like a photograph, is it a
photograph? And can something that that looks like something created by Picasso,
be a photograph?

We can explore these. But here a are a few practical links related to
making a photograph.

Club Meeting – 17 December 2014

This is it, the final meeting for 2014.

When
Wednesday 17th December, 19:30
Where
Karori Arts and Crafts Centre

Having discussed with a few others, we thought it would be good to ask everyone to bring along their favorite image (or 3) of the year.

It can be either print or digital, and it doesn’t have to be your own image. It will be good to know why you like those images.

Now the crucial bit. It is going to be on Wednesday 17th December, 19:30 at our normal venue.

Note this is different to the normal 2nd/4th Wednesday routine. A couple of us have commitments on the 10th and desparately want to be at the final meeting.

This shouldn’t take too long and we’ll have a drink, nibble and a friendly natter afterwards.

Lastly

A number of people have recommended ‘Finding Vivian Maier’. It is showing at the Paramount or Light House in Petone.

A mysterious nanny, who secretly took over 100,000 photographs that were hidden in storage lockers and discovered decades later, is now considered among the 20th century’s greatest photographers. Maier’s strange and riveting life and art are revealed through never before seen photographs, films, and interviews with dozens who thought they knew her.
