UPCOMING EVENTS
Jul 2: Selection of images for Hutt-Karori Battle
It’s our turn to host the annual competition with our friends from the
Hutt Club. The battle will be on July 16. As you can see from the
following list, each club has to supply 20 prints and 20 digital images,
a formidable task for our small club, so we hope YOU can participate. As
for this meeting, the selection process is in some ways more interesting
than the actual battle, because club members get to make the decisions
and to agonise over what image best fits the topic.
If you’re a new member, don’t be put off by the thought of having to cut
a matte and frame your print – more experienced club members will be
happy to help (and that also applies to the KACC exhibition and the
regional battle below).
Jul 5-11: Karori Arts & Crafts Art & Photography Exhibition and Sale
By the time you get this, you’ll have already sent in your entry form.
But whether you’re an exhibitor or not, the KACC exhibitions are well
worth visiting, for the paintings and other crafts as much as for the
photographs. The exhibition starts with a wine & cheese on July 4.
Jul 30: Selection for the Wellington Regional Interclub Battle
This year‘s battle will be hosted by the Kapiti Coast Photographic
Society on August 12. We are selecting our club entries on July 30 (note
that’s not one of the standard 1st/3rd Wednesdays) so that we have more
time for printing and matting. Each of the five clubs participating will
enter one print for each of the following topics:
Aug 6: No meeting planned…
…seeing as we had one the week before. However if anyone wants a
tutorial/workshop in matting or anything else, tonight might be a good
opportunity to have an informal meeting (even more informal than usual,
that is). Please contact Stella or Mark or Bill if you have any ideas
for a tutorial.
Aug 12: Wellington Regional Interclub Battle
As noted above, most of the hard work has been done on the selection
night, so on the actual battle night, all you can do is relax and enjoy.
We’ll organize a car pool from Karori on the night, and will give
details closer to the time. The battle is at 7:30 p.m. and the
battleground will be the Presbyterian Church Hall, Ngaio Street,
Waikanae. (From S.H.1 at the BP service station head toward the coast
along Ngaio St. 0.5 km to the church hall which is on the right,
opposite Kaikomako Road.)
JUNE’S EVENTS
Jun 4: Feedback session for upcoming battles; Member’s slot – Duncan McDonald
Stella reports: Duncan had a shocking cold so it was very good of him to
come. He showed us a calendar and bookmarks he'd designed and printed -
very cool, especially the bookmarks. He'd doubled those over and put
magnetic tape so he can put them over a page at the last line he read.
The narrow cropping of those images actually made them a lot stronger
too. He also showed some projected images. The calendar template can be
downloaded free and when you type in the year it automatically puts the
dates under the right weekdays.
Most people (from the small turnout – ahem!) showed potential battle
images and there are several good images, so hopefully we are in good
shape for the Hutt and regional battles.
Jun 18: Guest speaker: Alan Knowles (art & documentary photography)
Alan is an extremely versatile art and documentary photographer – and
having just been looking at his website www.alanknowles.com, I can’t get
over just how versatile he is. Alan structured his talk around recent
projects – sports photographs quite different to the usual genre, the
Griffins biscuit factory, wildflowers of Wellington and the old people’s
home that resulted in huge and unwarranted controversy. Oh, and the New
Zealand Geographic article on the forestry towns on the Kaingaroa
Plateau. Inspirational and down-to-earth at the same time.
