Inside This Month’s Newsletter…
Joanne Long is heading overseas in September, managing a private yacht for two years and sailing it to Croatia – via just about every gorgeous spot you can imagine on the way. Most of us can only dream about doing this – or perhaps it’s beyond your wildest dreams. Plenty of time and opportunity for scuba-diving and photography, just about idyllic. Then again, you might be prone to sea sickness.
Anyway, that will leave us without a president, and without access to a digital projector. This meeting will need to (1) install one or two people to fill the position of president (or convenor, call it what you will); (2) set in motion a plan to purchase a digital projector; (3) scrutinise the programme for the rest of the year (included at the end of the newsletter), and decide if any changes need to be made; (4) decide whether you want the KCC annual exhibition to be open on the weekend ie requiring volunteer staff.
The lighter side of the evening will be a workshop to matte photographs for the Interclub Battle. You will need to provide your own materials, but there will be free advice of matte dimensions and cutting technique.
The Wellington Photographic Society is hosting this year’s battle. “Because of the increased numbers expected to attend from the 5 Clubs, our regular meeting place at the Arts Centre is not big enough, and therefore this meeting night will be held at the Johnsonville Uniting Church, 18 Dr. Taylor Terrace, Johnsonville. Parking is available along Dr. Taylor Terrace and Wanaka Street, and plenty of off street parking by Johnsonville railway station.
This is a meeting not to miss, as it will be a fun evening accompanied with good photographs and fierce competition. The power of a supportive crowd cannot be underestimated, so we encourage as many of our members as possible to attend this meeting and support our efforts to come out on top.” WPS won the battle last year….make sure someone else wins this year.
The programme calls for Club member show & tell #3 – Joanne Long. However, Joanne is likely to be halfway to Vanuatu on that date. It has also been suggested that Kent Blechynden’s talk could be re-programmed to this date, but that depends on whether Kent has recovered from his encounter with a taxi (see below). Are there any volunteers to do a “show & tell” on either this date or the following meeting? – for example we could have 3 people – each with a 20 minute slot to show whatever they like – recent photographs, a project, a technique …
This event almost got forgotten about. Basically, we can hang the exhibition on Friday 14 after 4pm, or on Saturday 15. The exhibition is up all week, and will be taken down on the Friday evening or weekend (as long as it doesn’t conflict with an embroidery workshop).
Only a small turn-out by KCC folk: thanks to Syd Moore, Janet Wilson, Bill Leask, Duncan McDonald and Heuchan Hobbs for entering pictures. Also two interesting photo triptychs by non-KCC photographer Lynn Straugheir – small (15x12 cm) grasses and Kapiti beach.
Dominion Post photographer Kent Blechynden was scheduled for this evening, but had a job out of town to do at short notice. Rob Kitchin, another Dom Post photographer, was able to stand in, in the last minute. He showed us some fantastic photographs, and gave us a great insight in to the life of a newspaper photographer. Thank you to Stella for organizing this for us.
Kent would still like to come and talk to us, but has been in hospital after a taxi backed over him, so there is no definite date at this stage.
Hopefully you all got to see the Capital Vision 2007 collection – the best from the Dominion Post photographers – at the Academy of Fine Arts. Thank you very much to the Dominion Post, who donated two copies of the book of the collection to Karori Camera Club.
Thanks to everyone for a good turn-out, and a good selection of pictures. More on the battle above.
Congratulations to Duncan for winning first prize in the scenery category of the Grownups national photography competition with his photograph of early morning fog over the Wellington wharves. Duncan also won second prize in the portrait category for his photo of “knitting.” Grownups is an online magazine and New Zealand’s only site specifically for people aged 50-plus (www.grownups.co.nz).
To cap it off, Duncan and his photographs were covered in an article in The Wellingtonian on 12 July, which included his picture and some of Duncan’s philosophy of photography.

The Hutt-Karori Battle will be hosted by Hutt Camera Club on Tuesday 13 November 2007:
Be warned that the Hutt Club has had in-house competitions for the “Glass” and “Purple” topics, so they will have had a more intensive selection process than we are likely to have. Personally I’m finding it hard to find any purple photos in my recent shooting – so this may be a topic that needs some group brain-storming.
You’ll be aware that we have selected prints for the Wellington Battle, and now we’re asking for prints for the annual exhibition in September and prints for the Hutt – Karori Battle in November. Here’s another idea – the PSNZ Central Regional Convention is holding an interclub digital competition, closing date 1 October. A club entry consists of 8 images from 8 different members, unless you’re a small club like us, in which case a maximum of two members may enter two images each to make up the selection.
Your humble newsletter writer suggests that we send in an entry for this competition. We would need at least 6 people to contribute. The subject is Open, and may include any genre, providing they have originated in a camera. The images will be judged separately – there is NO requirement that they fit together or form a set. Image size 1024 pixels on the long side at 72 dpi in JPG format. The Wanganui Cup will be presented for the best Club Set of Projected Images, and the Heney Cup will be presented for the Champion Projected Image.
More detailed information on the Central Convention is attached to this email.
The Northern Regional this year will be held in Hamilton, 5 - 7 October at the Cosmopolitan Club, Claudelands Road, almost in the heart of the City, but in a quiet street with a large parking area and with plenty of accommodation in fairly close proximity.
We are organising a great programme with three very different speakers who will inspire and enthuse you. We will also have a workshop on Photoshop CS3 which will cater for both the experienced and the beginner.
As for our field trips, you will have three options to choose from. The difficulty will be, which ones not to choose!
As well as the northern interclub digital salon, there will also be a print competition for anyone attending the Convention.
We've also made suggestions in our Convention information as to other places you might like to check out if you want to find some of the picturesque spots in our City.
The early bird registration closes on 31 August, so get yours in quickly. You will find all the details, including the salon and print competition entry forms, as well as the registration form, on our website, www.waikatophotosoc.org.nz, and, as well, they are being posted out with the next Camera Talk.
We are looking forward to a great weekend - we know you will enjoy it too.
See you there.

Chairman
Waikato Photographic Society for the
PSNZ Northern Regional Convention
You are cordially invited to the PSNZ Southern Regional Conference in Alexandra October 5th - 7th, and/or enter images into the salon.
You are guaranteed to have fun, and learn more about both the art and craft of photography. We are excited about our speakers who range from artistic to scientific, and know the images you will see from the salon entries, and speakers will inspire you.
There is a cheaper registration fee if you are early, and accommodation will be tight in Alexandra so book early please - remember there is lots of picturesque accommodation up and down the valleys that might be a lot more fun that a 'standard' motel in Alexandra.
Have a look at our Web site for more information.

The following is copied from Bruce Girdwood’s draft programme. We need some feedback on what you’d like to do for the rest of the year. Some people have expressed a wish for a workshop on basic camera technique, and perhaps another on basic image manipulation. A fieldtrip or two would be good as well.
